Disney Hates Parents

I was reading to my son from an old set of DIsney books. These were from a Fun-to-Learn set of books that all taught something different using the main Disney characters (Mickey, Donald, Goofy, etc). One of the books, volume 13, is about the seasons and holidays and something struck me.

The book covers all the major US holidays and we got to the pages about Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Now, we all know how much it sucks to be a mother in the Disney universe.  No one has a mother for very long. But the cast of characters in these books are the core Disney characters, not fairy tale characters. Yet, no one has a mother or even a father.

To talk about Mother’s Day the book had to use Grandma Duck for Huey, Dewey and Lewie as they have no parents. It’s unclear if Grandma Duck is either Donald or Scrooge’s mother. Because if she were, why didn’t they have Donald giving his Mom a present instead of the kids, who are grandchildren?

Father’s Day was equally as weird.  There are apparently two mouse kids, Mortie and Ferdie. But they are Mickey’s nephews. Who is also not married or living with Minnie. These books treat these mice almost as a nuclear family but they aren’t.

So I’m not sure what the message here is from Disney. It’s either open to different family types. Or it’s hostile to real biological parents.
