Seriously people, why can’t you compress your files into a .zip file like everyone else? Anyone can open a .zip file. But I can’t open a .rar file without getting a separate program. I don’t want to install random free program with who knows what attached to it or buy a program just to decompress your folder.

Use 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org) – it will open just about anything.
Its been awhile, but I believe the .rar format yields greater compression rates than a standard .zip will, which is why it is used 🙂
