A Week

So…this has been a week.

The protests continue to rage across the country. Houston had more than 60k march. Other big cities had similar turn outs. Then smaller marches and rallies happened this weekend. I attended a few local ones. And when a small white town like Friendswood, TX has well over a hundred people turn out to support Black Lives Matter, you know people are starting to (finally) take notice.

After some despicable actions Trump has largely been kept silent so that’s something. Former generals and even a few active Republican politicians have come out against his actions. Maybe progress?

Minneapolis looks like they might disband their police force and start over. That’s something that’s looking more and more like a good idea across the nation. Especially after the events in Buffalo. When the whole team quits because two guys get suspended for shoving an elderly man for no reason, I think you might have an internal problem. And then when all of those guys are offered a job by other police organizations (from where I grew up nonetheless, uh).

Of course, COVID-19 is still a thing. Texas has hit a new high for hospital admissions related to the virus. And we’re in a two week continual rise in cases. Let’s see, what was two weeks ago. Oh that’s right, two weeks ago was just a few weeks after the lockdown restrictions started coming down. So two weeks from now we’ll start adding spread from protests on top of that and we’re looking at a New York/Italy like situation in Texas. It probably is already to late.

Watch for Republicans to blame the protests for the new spike. And for them to suddenly be in favor of harsh stay-at-home orders enforced by the law. The protests certainly didn’t help prevent the spread but they aren’t the cause of this spike. This spike started before. This spike started when Republicans opened everything back up and forced everyone to go back to work.
