Thankful Thanksgiving Day 14: Board Games

Published by Wayne on

Today, I am thankful for board games. Most people, when they think of board games think of things like Monopoly or Clue, Park Brother games. Through my friends, I’ve discovered a whole world of awesome games out there. And nothing against Clue (lots against Monopoly), but these games are a lot of fun.

Games are a great way to interact, socialize, and have a lot of fun with friends. And to make friends. When we first moved to Houston, through a series of convoluted contacts, we were invited to someones regular game night. Even though that couple has since moved away, we met a good group of people who we try to have regular gaming nights with. Unfortunately, regular ends up being monthly or longer. Aside from being fun, the games provide a good excuse to get together, that when everyone is busy, just hanging out doesn’t do.

Cooperative games are some of the best ones, and something I never experienced as a kid, though Axis and Allies sort of counts since you had a team. Done properly, these games allow you work with each other against the game, instead of against each other. Though, competitive games are fun too.

I’ll leave you with a good list of games to try out:

  1. Guillotine
  2. Flux
  3. Loot
  4. Killer Bunnies
  5. Carcassonne
  6. Settlers of Cataan
  7. Saboteur

  9. Atmosfear
  10. Cosmic Encounters

  1. Battlestar Galactica
  2. Lord of the Rings
  3. Ghost Stories
  4. Castle Panic

Nice selection, I’ve played many. Fluxx is fun, especially a lot of the themed versions. If you like Betrayal, you should check out Arkham Asylum. It is somewhat similar, but based off the Cthulu mythos (if you are into that). There are a few expansions as well, like with the BSG game.

Also, if interested in a fun little card game, check out Squish Blocks (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/56265/squish-blocks).

I’ll have to check that one out. Always looking for new games.

A friend has Arkham Horror, I’ve just never happened to be around on the nights that they’ve played that.
