Apparently, information about the Star Wars: The Old Republic Collector’s Edition has leaked.

The Star Was: The Old Republic alleged box art and Collector’s Edition information have been leaked. According to a Polish website, the pre-order for SW:TOR, the new massively multiplayer online role playing game from Electronic Arts and BioWare will begin Thursday, July 21. Keep in mind that none of this has been confirmed, but according to the leaked image, the Collector’s Edition will include:

  • The Journal of Master Gnost-Dural annotated by Satele Shan
  • Old Republic galaxy map
  • Custom Security Authentication Key (i.e. Authenticator)

  • STAP: Sleek and unique in-game vehicle

Normally, I’m not one for Collector’s Editions. It’s just a fancy box and some colorful art books that get buried with the other crap you have in your closest. And for $220, I’m really skeptical. However, some of that stuff does sound really cool. I like the authenticator idea (after having my LOTRO account hacked last year, I came to wish more games had them). I would expect the digital items will be pre-order rewards based on where you make the pre-order and the only way to get all of them will be the collector’s edition.

Now, if the Collector’s Edition came with a lifetime subscription, then we’d be talking. A lifetime subscription is a really good bargain for any game you’re really into. I wish SWG had had one. I would have saved so much money in the long run and would have been able to play those random times I had the urge after formally quitting. It’s been great for STO. I go through spurts of interest, and like to log in for an occasional mission, especially during Weekly Series. But I don’t play long enough in a month to justify a subscription and resubbing all the time would be annoying.

So, I’ll likely pass on the Collector’s Edition, despite the temptation, but if there is a lifetime sub, I’ll be all over it.

As I wrote in the Rogues forum, I would take the cost with a grain of salt. They rarely use proper exchange rates for things like this, so I would expect it to be sold for $150 in the US if it’s 150 Euro.

The cost of the Spotify subscriptions would be a shining example of how they tend to use a one to one exchange rate (which, honestly, makes no sense) where a premium subscription is $9.99 in the US, €9.99 in the Euro zone, £9.99 in the UK and 99.9 SEK (for us Swedes).

A Swedish website has a collectors edition listed for 1499 SEK as an example, which would seem to follow this asinine exchange rate (it would be around $240-260 if properly converted to USD).

But overall, it’s probably just guesswork at this point.

Guess we’ll find out soon if the date listed is correct. I could see myself potentially paying $60 or maybe $70.

The one thing I like to see is the authenticator there in the box. That level of account security is becoming standard now, which is a good thing.

But ~$200 for a CE. Hrmm, no.

That would be nice. Wonder if that will be an option for all the regular versions.

I’ve not used any authenticators but I like Google’s two layer security system. As much as I use my gmail for, it’s nice with extra security.

They’d be absolutely stupid not to include an authenticator option for any account. As I read it, the CE is a custom one, something different than available with the other versions.

If, however, they limit an authenticator to only a CE, that is grounds for dismissing the game entirely.
