STO F2P Matrix

Published by Wayne on

The features matrix for STO’s conversion to F2P is now available. Pretty standard fair. It looks like you don’t lose much if you are a Silver (free) player. Gold members only seem to gain the following advantages:

  • 400 Cryptic points per month (which is lower than 500 that seems to be the norm)
  • Unlimited chat and mail (standard feature)
  • More storage
  • Foundry access (build, silver can play)
  • Vet rewards
  • Retrain tokens
  • Additional BO slots (normally get +2 at each level, Silver won’t get that which will suck)

Check out this handy free-to-play features matrix to see the different features available to Gold Members and Silver Players.

Please note: This features matrix, like the rest of Star Trek Online’s free-to-play effort is subject to change based on user feedback.

What’s the Foundry thing? I’ll probably pick it up to RP in when it goes live. The only thing I see that may suck is limited chat.

The Foundry similar to SWG’s Story Teller, except you create missions in instances (like all missions) instead of dropping things in the open world environment. Basically allows you to create missions similar to what the Devs created. It’s a cool feature.

The limited chat seems to be focused on broadcast channels (zone and custom). Local channels might be unaffected. And it’s anti-spam so regular use is supposed to be unaffected. But who knows what that means.

Ah yeah, I heard about that, but didn’t know what it was called. Looks like the limited chat is a temporary thing. If you play more than 20 hours, purchase something, or have held a paid account the restrictions are gone. Not too bad afterall.

Probably a means to end people creating free accounts to spam advertisements for selling game currency and items for real money. Those “people” tend to pop up in most games these days.

It doesn’t seem too limited as free to play often is, but it’s hard to know what the different limitations are and what they affect. At least for me who has never tried STO. I might do that now though.

Yeah, you’ll be able to do pretty much the entire game as F2P. The only thing you’ll miss out on will be the Foundry (not for everyone), a little bit of free stuff and free points (better value to just buy $15 worth).

That’s exactly it, Sienn. I was worried about chat limitations, but as soon as you “prove” you aren’t a seller/spammer the limitations get removed, which is great. I can live with not having the Gold features.
