SciFi Fantasy Saturday- April 14
Last week’s Sci-Fi Fantasy Saturday was fun, so here’s another snippet from Aristeia: Revolutionary Right.
“You going to tell me where we’re going?” Saracasi asked impatiently.
“As soon as I know, I’ll tell you,” Maarkean replied, which got a sigh from Saracasi.
“You’re still insisting on not knowing where we’re going? Last time, we nearly missed our drop because of the time we wasted on your false course.”
“Late’s better than dead,” Maarkean replied.
Before departing for any illicit delivery, he always plotted a random hyperspace jump. He would never look at the real destination until they were safely in hyperspace and away from any watching sensors. He didn’t want that knowledge to affect his false course. The biggest business on the Black Market was information, and knowing where someone was headed with a potentially valuable cargo was always worth something.

I do enjoy great dialogue…and “late’s better than dead” is a great mantra to live by. Although it does depend on the people you’re going to be late for…some of them, you might be better off dead. 🙂

I assume he has some way of telling where he is at the end of that random jump?

It’s a random destination but he knows where he’s going. More equivalent to pointing to a spot on a map and driving there, rather than the blind jump liked you see in BSG.

He has a point – late is definitely better than dead. Sounds like a damn good strategy to me.
