Maarkean held her gaze for a moment and then turned back to the computer display. Traveling in hyperspace meant there would not be anything new on the pilot’s display, and Saracasi knew he was stalling. She had avoided having this conversation with him until now.

The conviction he had shown in helping the Enroians had surprised her. He had shown signs of coming around to accepting the flaws in theAlliance, but it had been a slow process. While it hadn’t been the first time he had taken up arms against his former government—once he had done so to save her, and once he’d done so to pay off a debt—he had never done it out of a conviction that theAlliancewas doing anything wrong. Enro had changed him.

As much as she was glad to see this change, it worried her. In truth, the idea of an open rebellion scared her. She had advocated for change within theAlliancefor a long time and had even agreed with the people who claimed an uprising might be necessary. But Enro had changed her, too.

Until that battle, she had never killed anyone. Until that battle, she had never really understood what war was and what it did to people. Everything was different now.

War can do that to a person – not that I’d know. Great snippet. I can sense a bit of melancholy and despair creeping into Maarkean…

Ah, yes. That all-important first battle that can make or break your resolve.

Nice character development. Good snippet.

Great introspection for the reader to set up motivations for the coming sequences. Looking forward to reading more.

War changes everything. At least, that’s what my characters keep telling me. The closest I’ve come to war is battling the checkout lines at the grocer.

Seriously though – great scene!

Lots of angst. I love it.

This is a lovely inner monologue. Especially the last few sentences. The repetition is well placed and the last sentence is ominous in that way that simple, quiet thoughts can be. Awesome.

War always changes people. Curios to know what will happen next.
