Planetary Perspective

Thinking about my comments on perspective from my last blog post, here’s something that will blow your mind:

 

I never realized how close in size the moon is to Mercury. And how small Mars is compared to Earth. I knew it was smaller, but that’s not much bigger than the moon really.

And damn, those stars are huge. VY Canis Majoris, if placed in our solar system would fill all the area out to the orbit of Saturn. 3 billion kilometer radius. (though Wiki tells me there is some debate about that, it might only fill the area out to Mars)

I love seeing things like this that put the universe in perspective. It is incredibly difficult to visualize the size of objects in the universe, and when you see things like this it is just mind blowing. Nice find.
