Here it Comes

Well, tomorrow’s the big day, SWTOR begins Early Game Access. Since I registered my pre-order key the morning it started, I expect I’ll be able to get in tomorrow. If not, then WAY to many people were up and ordering the game overnight.

I face a tough dilemma. There is a real chance I can finish the first draft of book 2 before we leave for my parents. That will require long days of dedicated work. SWTOR will be a big draw. Playing in the early days of a game launch is always exciting. The Republic Sentinels are all roaring to go.  I wouldn’t want to get left behind, since I won’t play at all between Christmas and New Years.

But finishing my first draft would be cool. Then I could take a break, come back to it after the new year. Take it from the rough, incoherent mess of alpha, and into a readable beta version. If things go well I can get the first round of revisions done before the baby shows up. If I break for Christmas, I might lose my focus.

Decisions, decisions. Desire for writing completion versus gaming. A few years ago, I would have been sure gaming would win. But now, I’m not so sure. This isn’t really work, since I enjoy what I’m doing. That and I can’t play games for nearly as long in one sitting as I use too. Get restless and need to move and do something else.

Except for Civ. That still just sucks you in and distorts time.

If you’re like me, you’ll get bored with TOR fast, so it won’t be an issue 😛

Seriously, though, if you focus on the book, TOR will be in your head, beckoning you. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to do both. Play a little TOR, but limit yourself, then do more work on your book.

If you are still “in the zone” for the book, make sure you write down everything relevant, while you have it, even if you can’t flesh it out just yet. That way you won’t be trying to figure out what where you were going with it if you can’t finish before you leave.

Yeah, not writing and just playing SWTOR is not even an option. Can’t play that much and need to write. It’s all just a question of scale. Just play SWTOR for a little bit in the evening, or write for a few hours and then go play?
