SWTOR Class Guide

Published by Wayne on

Having some trouble picking a class in SWTOR? What to know how they are different from each other? Well here’s a quick and dirty guide based just on their game play mechanics. I warn you, I  haven’t personally played all of them, so some thoughts are based on observations in combat.

Smuggler/Agent

  • Scoundrel– Stealthy Healer.  If you like sneaking around and shooting people in the back with a shotgun, this one is for you. The scoundrel is a nice mix of melee and ranged DPS in the Scrapper tree, while the Sawbones makes them an adequate medic.
  • Operative– Very similar to the Scoundrel, but uses a knife and a rifle instead of a pistol and a shotgun.  Want to stab people in the back? Go Operative.
  • Gunslinger– Want to wield two pistols? Shoot stuff from behind cover? Have that cowboy hat you can earn at level 50 match your class, then this is for you.
  • Sniper- It’s all in the name. Similar to the gunslinger in mechanics, the sniper hides in the distance and blasts people with high power sniper rifle. Boom! Headshot!

Trooper/Bounty Hunter

  • Commando– I have played neither of these classes personally, but I’ve been healed by them. They make a good healers with their green healing goo grenade and their ghostbuster looking heal gun. They also make things blow up.
  • Mercenary– Instead of the big ass gun that the Commando gets, the Mercenary wields two pistols.
  • Powertech– Shields up! Big focus of these classes are tanking. Improve their armor and shield triggers and they can sit there and absorb damage.
  • Vanguard– Like commando, the vanguard wields big guns instead of pistols. Say hello to my little friend!

Jedi Knight/Sith Warrior

  • Sentinel/Marauder– Wield two lightsabers, slice stuff up. Haven’t tried marauder, but the Sentinels trees focus on two unique lightsaber forms: Ataru or Juyo. Juyo is all about DOT’s while Ataru is bonus damage. One nice thing about Sentinel is you’re stuck with medium armor instead of heavy. It’s easier to find armor that looks like Jedi robes instead of combat armor.
  • Guardian/Juggernaut– Wield one lightsaber and stand at the front lines, protecting your squishy friends. Aside from the heavy looking armor, this is the role people would think a Jedi would fill.

Jedi Consular/Sith Inquisitor

  • Jedi Sage– Yoda. Wield the Force as your primary weapon. Force push, force pull, throw stuff at your enemies. And you can be a Jedi healer.
  • Sith Sorcerer– Lightning. That’s all you need to know. Want to fry people with lightning, go sorcerer.
  • Jedi Shadow– Stealthy tank. It’s an odd combo, especially for a light armor class, but using the force you can sneak around and absorb damage. Also gets a double bladed saber.
  • Sith Assassin– Want to look like Darth Maul with a red double bladed saber, this is for you.
