We‘re going to review something a bit different this week and take a look at a series of kid books everyone in our house enjoys. “Narwhal and Jelly” by Ben Clanton is a fun series of books about two ocean friends.
The premise is simple if common. Two unlikely friends have adventures together. But that’s not a knock against it. The trope works for a reason. The books start off with Narwhal and Jelly (a Jellyfish) meeting and neither thinking the other is real. They must by mystical fantasy creatures because nothing like the other could exist. Then they decide to be friends.
While the premise may not be unique the books are still fun and the characters lovable. One of their favorite activities is to eat waffles, which just so happen to be one of my son’s favorite foods. I’m sure this played no small part in his falling in love with these books.
There are four books in the series so far and each follows a similar pattern. Narwhal and Jelly have a few adventures broken into a few small stories. These are interspersed with sealife facts, something kids love to learn, as well as a mini-comic book about Super Waffle and Strawberry Sidekick.
If you have kids I highly recommend these books.
And to quote my son when asked if people should read these books,
