Purple Haze

I’ve never been a huge fan of purple. Nothing against it, just wasn’t my favorite color. Unlike pink, which I detest. Until Attack of the Clones came out. Now, we’ll avoid talking about the prequels except to say that Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber just looked damn cool. I don’t really know why, but purple seemed to be a great lightsaber color.

So purple grew on me. When I play Jedi based video games, I tend to pick purple as a saber color. I like blue and green too, but prefer purple. With SWTOR, I fully planned to do the same. Even made my Twi’lek, Surrelix, have purple eyes so they would match.

And then I learned that having a purple lightsaber crystal is damn near impossible to acquire.  One of the Devs recently posted to a discussion thread to confirm, that yes, the purple (or magenta) crystal does exist, but it is the RAREST item in the game. Seriously? A lightsaber crystal is the rarest item in the game?

Apparently, the schematic for the crystal drops from a high level world boss (my guild fought the Coruscant one with 12 people, when we were a few levels above him and got worked. Came back a bit later when we were many levels above him and did take him down).  AND then it requires a component that NO ONE knows how to get. The Devs posted simply confirmed that it’s not acquired through reverse engineering.

Every other standard color is available (blue, green, red, yellow, orange). Why make purple hard to get? These crystals go in guns too. I’ve seen NPC’s running around shooting purple blaster bolts and wielding purple lightsabers. Why make it so hard for players to acquire?

Games annoy me when they stupid stuff like this. The new MACO armor that STO added to the STF was cool, but the helmet costume piece required a full set of MXII gear. The Mk XI gear, which gives the rest of the costume, requires running the STF’s about 120 times (or getting really lucky with a loot drop). To get MK XII, you need to get really luck three times on the harder level missions. I didn’t mind working to get the MK XI, but I hate loot drops.

Random chance can go screw itself.  I won’t do something repeatedly for a miniscule chance at something. I want the purple crystal, but I’m not camping a world boss ad nauseum to get it. A game isn’t worth that kind of time commitment.  Especially since my Jedi is a dual wielding Sentinel. I’d have to do it TWICE.
