Ignorant Bigotry

First, watch this for context.

This video was shared by a friend of mine on Facebook. Now, this is the response he got (Italics mine, names have been removed):

  • Response by Friend:Hey, the guy asked for a straight answer.. He got it.. Just cause Romney belives the way he does… This guy shouldnt get his panties all up In a bunch… If that’s the only reason why he won’t give Romney his vote, then he has issues… Let him vote for Obma.. The fact is Obma doesn’t belive in Gay marriage either.. 2 reason why Obma said he is for gay marriage…1. It’s election time..2. Biden back Obma into a corner… What was he going to do?? Make his VP look like a lyre… At least Romney hasn’t changed his position on this subject
  • Response by Poster: Romney told him he doesn’t believe that he should have the same rights as anyone else. Why wouldn’t that cause him to be angry?
  • Response by Friend: And may I add… Obma doesn’t care about the military past, present, future. Not saying I agree w Romney… But Obma feels the same way.. But this man.. What’s to get pissed at him, and not at Obma??? I belive everyone should have the same rights… But if I disagree w something ok, u and I might disagree on a lot of things, but doesn’t mean I will quite talking to u… He should respect Romny’s out look on this and move on

Now, terrible grammar aside, the italicized portions sum up the gap between those who support gay marriage and those that don’t. The people who oppose it, like this man, think it’s just a difference of opinion. They think people who support gay marriage want to take their right to hate gay people away. Which is completely missing the point.

Preventing gay people from getting married is preventing them from having a right that you have. You are actively interfering with a person’s right to do something they want to do. People who support gay marriage are in no way stopping you from having the opinion that gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed.

Gay marriage can be legal and you can still hate it. This is not an issue of everyone should respect each other’s opinions and not get mad at each other. You want to deny someone else a right. All they want to do is have the right to do something. Them getting married does NOTHING to you. You can still get married. You can still hate them.

I really can not understand why people think like this.  Many of the same people who throw a hissy fit any time you even think about talking about gun control laws because they have a right to their guns, don’t bat an eye about the government denying two people the right to marry.  If you really believe in the government not interfering in your life or taking away your rights, where’s the outrage over that very thing happening?

The problem is anyone who supports legally banning gay marriage either does not actually believe in equal rights or they are a homophobic bigot. You can have to at least be one of those. You can hate gay people and you can hate the idea of them getting married. That’s a pretty ugly opinion, but it is an opinion. But if you then say the government should ban then from getting married and try to pretend it’s anything other than because you’re a bigot, you’re also a hypocrite.

So if you support banning gay marriage, be honest with yourself. You’re a bigot. Don’t try and pretend any different. If the idea of being a bigot bothers you, then maybe you should really think about that. Because you’re actively trying to deny another person a right. If you can’t understand why that would make them mad, then you’re an idiot in addition to being a bigot.
