Hello Computer…

You know on Star Trek, particularly TNG, everything could be controlled via voice commands? And everything was run through one central computer? You could walk into a room and turn the lights on or change the temperature or ask for a particular type of music to be played.

I was messing with the Xbox’s Kinect the other day and using the voice command feature. Its not perfect but it works pretty well. Playing and pausing video is quite good. It got me thinking, how hard would it be to do the Star Trek style set up to a house?

I know there are systems out there for wiring a house to be controlled via computer or smart phone app. At least some things. But is it possible to have everything controlled from a smart phone or voice controls without needing a dozen different systems and apps?

If anyone knows of a good way to do this let me know. I’d love to do that to my home some day. Walk into a room and just as the room to play me something and then it accessed my Google music account and plays me the song I requested over the speakers installed in the room.  Then have it pause when a call comes in.

I’m sure there has to be a way to do this. We run almost everything through Google now. Music, pictures, phone. Add in some home controls and some hardware and it should be possible.
