Thankful Thanksgiving Day 18: Air Conditioning
Even though it is now quite pleasant outside, I must express my thankfulness for the wonder that is air conditioning. As a native Floridian and now resident Texan, I have lived all but one year of my life in places that don’t experience what most people call winter. The temperature getting below freezing happens for maybe a week in January. And from May to September it will be 85+ degrees with high humidity. For at least three of those months it will often get close to or over 100.
When the heat finally breaks in October, or when it is just starting to warm up in April, even though there will be nice days, you’ll still generally want the AC on at night due to the humidity. Even temperatures in the 70’s are uncomfortable when everything’s sticky.
I can’t imagine how people survived for the first 20,000 years of human civilization. Or in areas that can’t afford it. I know that makes me sound incredible spoiled but I am. I would guess that not knowing AC exists goes a long way to making warm and sticky weather more tolerable.
So I am really thankful I live an age with AC and in a place where it’s common.
