Lying Liars who Lie

I am ashamed because I know what Mr. Trump is.
He is a racist.
He is a conman.
He is a cheat.

Michael Cohen testified before Congress last week. You can see the whole thing on video and there are some nice tidbits. But his opening statement sums everything up pretty nicely.

At the core of this testimony is if you can believe Michael Cohen. Every he says sounds believable. It jives with every impression I’ve gotten from Trump. This testimony sounds like him.

Of course, you have to be careful of confirmation bias. Michael Cohen says bad things about Trump which jive with what I already thought. Therefore it must be true right?

So, in order to avoid that, does that mean we should discount what Cohen said? He’s been convicted of lying after all. Does that mean we should assume everything he says is a lie? Should we discount it completely?

I don’t think its that simple. We can’t just trust everything he says but that doesn’t mean we can discount it. Reading through what he had to say, does anything actually sound unbelievable?

Focusing on the crime Cohen’s convicted for, he paid a porn actress $135,000. Why would he do that if he wasn’t trying to cover something up? He had to take a home equity loan out to get the money.  And then Trump just coincidently pays him the same amount over the course of a few months?

Let’s say Cohen did make the payments completely of his own accord. He was still covering up Trumps affair. Which Trump has lied about. No matter how you look at this whole thing you can’t put all the pieces together without Trump having lied.

And if we can say definitively that Trump’s lied, what else Cohen says can we take to be truth? There’s going to be a grain of truth to everything else he has said about Trump.
