Edge of the Empire

Fantasy Flight has announced some limited information about their new Star Wars RPG game; Edge of the Empire. Not much is available but those at GenCon may pick up more than is on the website currently. Agent 00 from the GSA has promised an article soon, so look out for that.

From their website:

To encapsulate the operatic grandeur of the Star Wars universe, the Star Wars Roleplaying Game will be presented in three epic installments. These take place during the height of the Rebel Alliance’s struggle against the Galactic Empire. Star Wars: Edge of the Empire is the first of these installments, focusing on the fringes of society, on the scum and villainy of the galaxy and the explorers and colonists of the Outer Rim. In this game, players take on the roles of hard-hearted bounty hunters, roguish scoundrels, charming smugglers, or fearless explorers trying to survive and thrive on the edges of civilization. The second two books will dive deeper into the Rebellion era and finally add game play rules for Jedi. That’s an interesting approach to the game, leaving Jedi for the third book. Some gamers aren’t necessarily thrilled with the idea of the focusing primarily on the Rebellion era, but it doesn’t bother me. While it’s nice that SWSE has information for all era’s in Star Wars, I’m kind of a Rebellion era junky. We’ll see how it turns out, but I wouldn’t expect it to be to hard to adapt things to be in any era, but I could be proven wrong.

The big news with this announcement is that the game is in beta and you can already purchase a playable version to test it out. $30 will get you a softcover book that will outline the rules for the game. FFG is also looking for feedback from people, hence the beta nature. They seem to be a reputable company so I would trust that they will take feedback seriously. They already delayed their living SW card game by a year to improve it.

I look forward to learning more about this new SW RPG system. Not sure I will buy it, since I do love Saga. But if it’s good, might be worth it.

I have to say I am not impressed. $30 for a beta test? That is Lucas’ doing (the company, not the man). I’m not sure I understand the idea of releasing a game like this in stages. It doesn’t seem to make much sense. RPGs usually start with a Core book that outlines the gameplay, rules, etc, and then supplements that add on additional rules, and settings. At this point, there needs to be some amazing game play for this to be of any interest. The high price tag for the beta turns me off already.
